Just my guess, I dont believe the term SUV had been thought of yet.
Also your local Jeep dealer parts department will be able to run vehicle history for you, though you may have to have an inside connection to get it done. Though the info you get...either from the dealer or Carfax may not be accurate, I would suggest obtaining both.
I ran a Carfax on my XJ and had my Parts Salesman run the VIN through Chrysler's database and case up with contradicting information. Chrysler says my XJ is right hand drive and exported... Carfax says my XJ was in Texas.. Eventually both Chrysler and Carfax come together with the same info... I have been unable to confirm or deny the fact my XJ may have been right hand drive..
