Engine: A secret
Default XJ from hell (or motor from hell)

Well I got my new engine in and...

IT WONT START

Timing sounds off

Sputters

good coil

timed right and timed 3 times

fuel is fine

dumped gas into the carb

Just wont start...

Chugs and ignites

just not enough

Injector connecter might be off on injector 1&2, but swapped them a few times

is there a fuse I should check? (I doubt it and didn't care to even think till now)

its an engine I never seen running, but I got it for $175...

Check Your timing chain, might be to lose and skipping,
you said you timed it 3 times, maybe thats why?
I have the same problem found out it was the timing chain.

well first im 99% almost positive you can't time your model jeep, i don't know if by "time" you mean your plug wires, but thats the first thing i would check, make sure all your plugs wires on and on in the correct order on the distributor going to the engine.

How new is the motor, junkyard new? or crate rebuilt new? could eliminate the possibility of a bad timing chain/jumped timing chain/timing chain installed incorrectly etc.

and by carb do you mean the throttle body? cause you said injectors too.

As above check plug wires are in correct order, just a note, had one towed to the shop last week, distributor was 180 deg. out of position, but check for the simple things first.

Check the gap on your spark plugs. Had the same thing happen after rebuilding my old engine and it drove me nuts. The gap on the plugs was off. That was the only thing wrong.

distributer is pointing to 1 with cap off and its on the top @ the compression stroke.

All new plugs.

Wires are the ones that the old engine had in it an they where fine.

Engine was pulled from a total, but it hasn't ran in a few months. Been sitting in an attached garage.

The Distributer was pulled out 3 times checking and rearranging plug wires.

Timing chain is going to be checked tomorrow morning... I'm to tired/lazy get up...

Radar, I meant I aligned them to be withing "auto-timing" area. (if thats the correct term) and yes, throttle body... not carb. I work on bikes a lot more than cars.

dumping gas into the "carb" (throttle body) won't do anything since its fuel injected. a failing CPS can cause it to run rough. MAP sensor, IAC, TPS, and fuel injectors...just some i can think of now

yeah i would start with the cps, then check your other sensors to make sure that they are all plugged in, sometimes you can check them with a multimeter to see if they are good,
and hope it's not fuel injectors cause they are expensive, but if you do get injectors i recommed the bosch stock upgrade injectors from fiveomotorsport.com they are great

how wouldn't it? You add fuel to the air side of the air/fuel mixture... therefore running a richer mixture for a shorter time.

Ok so, I pulled the distributor assembly and popped the cover off, pulled out the distributor and lined up the wholes and held them inline as I dropped it in.

She lives.
