XJ build ?s
I am sorry for the dumb noob ?s right now but could use some advice
Have: 92 XJ limited with RE 2in BB with 32 9.5 TSL's and a NP231 that lost 4 low.
i have another NP231 to go into the jeep but thinking that i should do a rebuild before i put in in the truck with an SYE and crawler gears. Any recommendations on what to get to upgrade it before it goes into the jeep.
I am also blessed with the Dana35 rear so I want that gone ASAP. I know the 8,8s from an exploder will work. what years should I look for. Also would like to lock it and figure on new gears for 35s down the road (something that wont hate me with the 32s now, i know might be a stretch)
For the dana 30 front, options to get it a little stonger with out killing my wallet and whats a good selectable locker.
Thanks in advance, drew

Look for a post 95 8.8 because they have the disk breaks, also be aware that many 8.8's are 4.10 gears so unless you have 4.10's up front you will need to think about what to do.
For the d30 I would recommend upgrading your shafts to increase its strength. With upgraded shafts the d30 can handle 35's. Locker wise, I am an ARB fan.

I agree with Kyle on the T/C thing I would just change the chain and put new seals and of course the mainshaft has to be changed for the SYE. I've only done one but an extra pair of hands and the FSM came in pretty handy.
The 8.8 did come with 4:10s but I think in the smaller engined versions, so look for a four banger (if that was an option) Not much of a Ford guy. The exception is their rear ends 8.8 for the Jeep and 9" for the race cars.
The D30 needs new axle shafts, as Kyle indicated, not just new but Alloy shafts. The locker carriers accept higher spline count axles so get the carrier first before investing hundreds in axle shafts, which won't fit if the spline count is different.
Those things being accomplished you are then good to easily about 38 inchers.

Depends on what you wheel.. As for after market gears for the 231, the only one out there is the 4 to 1 low kit from Tera Flex. Other than wheeling just rocks there is no reason to go that low. I'd say stick with the stock gears but upgrade to the wide chain and 6 planetary gear set. Both parts will work in a Jeep 231 and can be sourced from a S10 pick up..
