XJ Ball Joint Boot?
Hi all,
Very new here. I've got a problem in my front end (2000 XJ) ... Jerky steering and popping noise on tight turns. I had a look and the U-Joints feel a little loose, so I'm gonna replace em. I also noticed that the boot? (or is it a rubber washer) on the upper ball joint is torn. Can this be replaced or do I have to replace the ball joint ( I had 'em done three years ago ... 60000km, so I'm hoping that I don't need to do that again already).
Also, since I'm doing the axle shaft U-jonts should I go OEM or is there something better out there?
Thanks
-Sam

There are several aftermarket u-joints available. The stout ones are pretty expensive and the factory axles will break before the u-joint X will. Ox is such a provider of said u-joints. 4WD hardware has them and other brands as well. If you are going with a stronger u-joint you may want to consider changing the axle shafts over to alloy ones that will hold up to alot of abuse and can handle the stronger u-joints as well.

I always replace the stock axle joints with greasable versions. If you keep up on the lube they will last a long time.

I doubt they sell just the boot for that ball joint. If there's nothing wrong with them I'd just take that knuckle off and put a rubber washer on it. That should be good enough. when you tighten the ball-joint it should seal.
