Hi there,

My 96 XJ just started stalling/wanting to stall when my RPM drops while coming to a stop or coasting. It has only stalled completely one time while I was waiting at a red light, so hopefully I'm catching this early. I have been able to get around, but I'd like to fix whatever is wrong and not have to feather/pump my gas pedal every time my RPM is dropping.

There is no Check Engine Light on.

After asking around, it seems like it's most likely a malfunctioning fuel pump that is causing this to happen. Great Cherokee Gurus, am I on the right track? Is there an easy fix/solution to this problem (such as cleaning something) or will I most likely have to replace my fuel pump? How much will that set me back? Is it something I can do myself?

Check your fuel pressure using a test tool from Autozone or another local parts retailer (it's free, you just leave a deposit until you return it). If you do not get 49.2psi +-5, then you likely have a bad fuel pump.
Fuel pumps are pretty pricey, usually a couple hundred bucks. You may have to drop the tank, but I'm not certain on that year.
It is something you can do yourself, even if you do have to drop the tank, but it's a lengthy job. I found having a helper to move the jack while I aligned the tank to re-install it was a huge help.
