Default New question on buying a head

98 4.0 cherokee auto transmission

Good afternoon.
Searched a few months back and saw a few answers. Have forgotten what threads they are on and cannot seem to find them again.
Have had the dreaded overheating\headgasket.
Replaced the radiator, water pump, heater core, and ready to replace the head.

I read here that some heads are recommended more then others for thickness/nickle content.

Would like to know what for company I should buy a complete assembled new head. Links would be great not necessary though.

Have installed a new timing chain and oil pump also.
Will install all new hoses.

Anything else recommended while I am in there?
Any common problems with instillation?
Any other advice?

Thank you Andy

Head failure is extremely rare on 1998 models. What's the story?

On the way to work one morning it overheated. (Temp light)
I pulled over.
Opened the hood.
No boiling.
Started up again and seemed to be ok. (no temp light, ran fine)
10 miles later could feel motor.
Steaming.
Shaking as head gasket failure.

Have replaced most things temp related.
Time for head.
I know the gasket is bad.
Head is questionable.
Have another motor from another 98 that had overheating problems.
If the head is not warped will end up on that motor when finished with it.

Any other info needed?
What are you thinking?

Can you please clarify on what happened? The system was belching steam, and there was shaking?

That is correct.
Took it to my garage, head gasket.
The shaking is coming from pressure filling another cylinder.
Sound correct to you?

For the head gasket to blow there are other issues that led to overheating.
Have been slowly replacing things as cash is short.
Am looking to make sure all bases are covered.

Anyone have a manual with schematic? I'm in need to know the ignition coil wire to the PCM (which pin and color). I left my manual at my mom's before she moved out of state in the middle of a alarm/auto start install.

Is this for the tach signal? On what year Cherokee? I have a 99 and mine taps into this wire or possibly these wires? I didn't do this part of the install since it was already there from an older remote start before I put my new one in. Just used the same wire that was there. Yeah it's for the tach signal. I'd prefer to tap into it prior to going into the PCM. That way I can get a decent splice there and not cut into the factory loom much.
