Did it turn off, or did your gauges go dead for a moment?

The v8 Durango gear box is beefier and considered an upgrade, however there is some debate as to just how much of an "upgrade" it really is. Dukie did the upgrade on his. You can look up more info on it in "Durango steering box afterthoughts"... I think that's the name of it anyway.

My big deterrent is that you do lose a small amount of turning radius.

In my opinion, if it's steering fine, just replace it with another OEM. I'm turning 32s with the stock steering gear and pump. Only time it struggles is at idle speed when it's sitting still, but there are modifications you can do to the pump to boost the pressure, or you can swap in a WJ pump.

Well the only reason I looked down was because the trans/engine felt like it shifted or died. Looked down, gauges were all dead, flipped it into neutral and back into drive and it was back on. Not sure if the shifter movement did anything.

My first XJ did that. I think it was the CPS.

What diameter are the speaker holes in the front doors of a '97-'01 XJ?
I need to know the actual diameter of the holes themselves, NOT what size speakers will fit!
Thanks!

My stock box starting bleeding fluid so much I couldn't keep up with top-offs. From what I understand, the stock box is plenty strong enough to turn our 31s, its the fluid that gets hot and burns out the seals. I replaced mine with a stock box and an auxiliary fluid cooler and haven't had a bit of trouble out of it since.

1998 - 4.0L AW4 4" lift
Something strange happened on the highway last night while trying to downshift and pass another vehicle.
I gassed it and the auto trans downshifted to 2nd. When it went to shift to 3rd it completely missed the gear as if a passenger kicked the shifter from OD to N - which did not happen. I took it on some back roads to try and determine what was actually happening and now as I drive it 1st and 2nd shifts perfect, once I hit 30+ MPH and it tries to shift up to 3rd it just winds out the RPMs - most of the time. If it doesn't wind out the RPMs it won't even try to shift out of 2nd at all. It did just throw a CEL as I pulled in to the driveway which I will scan tonight, but was wondering if anybody had also experienced this same issue.

i noticed recently on cold starts (like really cold) that the starter makes some kind of knocking noise when turning the engine over.

it will start and run fine, i searched online "cold start knock" and all i get is actual engine knock videos and that's not my issue. it's a single *knock* when the engine turns over and starts. it really feels like the starter, so i'm guessing it's frozen or something, but does that indicate it's failing or expected in very cold weather? I've replaced it last spring if that matters

Is the starter loose?

nope it's solid

-25C today, and -40C with windchill (that's -13F and -40F respectively), so after work I'll hope it starts but I'll try to remember to record the sound it makes.

i have a block heater and an extension so i thought about plugging it to see if it changes something (engine somewhat warm but a freezing starter) but at work there is no plug outside and i live in a place with an interior garage, can't park outside.

They will honor their warranty too, the first one I got went bad about a year after I got it and they replaced it free of charge. You keep your warranty if you mail back the defective one too. 10 years free replacement works for me. Really beats paying $200+ for a mopar one!
Thanks. I'll search again for videos with the procedure. And thanks for the lead on a low cost replacement. Factory parts sometimes hurt so that's why I was thinking about cleaning or adjusting it.

Not to nitpick, by windchill "temperature" is completely irrelevant when it comes to machinery. It's only supposed to give you a sense of what the air feels like on bare skin. The windchill temp is one of the most overused and misunderstood meteorological concepts around. Sort of like oil viscosity.

oh i totally agree, i mentioned it just to show it got really cold, but i understand the difference.

-25C is pretty darn cold too though!! 2 of my co-workers had to get someone to jump their battery this morning since it was so cold during the night.
