Almost all of your answers lie here:

1998 jeep cherokee SE 4.0l 5 speed specs?

Your '98 is the High Output motor (which is really just a marketing name). The manual trans that year was the AX-15. You'd have to look at the axle because the D35 and the 8.25 were both offered that year, unless you have Anti-lock Brakes. Gears would depend on your other options, but (I think) 4.0L/manual would have 3.07s
I'm going to expand/correct this, because I am a jackass.

The "High Output" business was done by Chrysler to market their OBD-I system as it offered a small boost in peak HP over the original AMC "Renix" setup (Renault/Bendix MPFI). "High Output" was used 1991-1995 and on some 1996es. 1997+ XJs didn't have this badge and use a different fuel system, Chrysler OBD-II.

ABS was only available on the D35.

Thanks ill remember that.

Post Door Lock Issue

I'm a first time poster, but have gotten many good tips from the forums. I have a door lock issue with my 2000 Cherokee Sport and I haven't found the same symptoms in the forum.

About a year ago, my automatic remote door lock/unlock functions became intermittent. The key fob and receiver seem to be working as the interior lights turn on when I hit unlock and the horn honks when I hit lock. The door locks do not do anything. It would do this for a few days and then work again. I could still lock all the doors from the master control.

More recently, the fob rarely works (Lights and horn still trigger) and the master control won't lock the doors. Once in awhile, the doors will lock/unlock from the fob.

Any ideas?

Do the locks still work from the button in the driver's side (left) door?

The lock module is located in the passenger side (right) door. Much like the speakers, wires wear out and crack over time with usage. If the RKE module appears to be working by flashing lights etc I'd check the wiring.

There's also a VIN decoder that will tell you what came stock...no guarantees someone hasn't modded it though. You can also request a built sheet from the Jeep website.

The VIN decoder is absolutely useless unless you want to know where it was built or the engine.

As for the factory build sheet, Chrysler Canada didn't send me the list with FULL build codes for everything, but I did get this:

4.0L Engine(ERH)/5Sp Man Trans(DDQ)
...
All Manual Transmissions
5-Speed Manual Transmission
Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System
230MM Front Axle
3.07 Rear Axle Ratio
Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle
All Engines
4.0L I6 Power Tech Engine

That's your build sheet. He said VIN decoder. This is what you get:
http://www.morris4x4center.com/knowl...-1984-2001.htm

For his '98, that means the VIN tells:
Country of Origin 1 = United States
Make: J = Jeep
Vehicle Type: 4 = MPV
GVWR: F = 4001-5000 lbs.
Vehicle Line:
J = Cherokee 4×4 (LHD)
N = Cherokee 4×4 (RHD)
B = Cherokee 2WD (RHD)
T = Cherokee 2WD (LHD)
Series:
2 = SE
6 = Sport
7 = Country
Body Style:
7 = 2-Door Sport Utility
8 = 4-Door Sport Utility
Engine:
P = 2.5L 4-Cylinder MFI (EPE)
S = 4.0L I-6 HO MFI (ERH)
Check Digit: 0 through 9, or X
Model Year:
V = 1997
W = 1998
X = 1999
Assembly Plant: L = Toledo #1
Vehicle Build Sequence: Last 6 digits

So his VIN is 1J4FJ2_S_WL######

I overlooked the second part, but the VIN decoder still wouldn't answer any of his questions, and that's where the emphasis was placed.
