WTF?! Jeep bucking and stuttering again after 10 trouble free days with new fuel pump
My 1990 Base Model Cherokee recently had a new fuel pump installed. Reason: the Jeep had been bucking and choking like it was about to die; I’d just run the gas tank down to almost empty and then filled the vehicle up and my first thought was I must have filled up with bad gas. But the mechanic said bad gas wouldn’t be making the Jeep act that way – bucking & stuttering – and it had to be the fuel pump.
But after 10 days of trouble-free driving with the new fuel pump the Jeep has started to die again in the exact same way – it feels like someone is pinching off the fuel line but it might just as easily be that there’s too much fuel creating that effect. The Jeep bucks and shudders like it’s about to die. And no, it’s not the fuel filter; that was replaced, too, and just checked again yesterday. It’ll drive fine for 5 minutes or 20 minutes and then the shuddering starts again. Or it starts to sputter right after being started. Feels totally random.
Is this a familiar problem with my era Cherokee ('90 2.5L)? Because neither my mechanic nor a muffler shop I took it to (thinking it might be the catalytic converter) nor my gearhead brother can figure it out. And what’s worse (and would be hilarious if it wasn’t so f’ing annoying) the Jeep won’t misbehave in the presence of anyone who I take the car to show. In their presence it runs like it just came off the showroom floor...
Has anyone here with the same era Cherokee experienced a similar problem? Maybe the new fuel pump already went bad? Maybe it’s the fuel pressure regulator? The throttle body? Bad injectors? I’ve read a few threads here and elsewhere that describe what sounds like the same problem I’m having but, weirdly, everyone had a completely different solution to the same problem.
I use the Jeep as a delivery vehicle for my business and I can’t drive more than 5 miles from my shop without feeling like I’m going to wind up with a dead Jeep on the side of the road…
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
