Default Won't start after alternator short

I have a 1998 4.0 cherokee. The volt guage has been going to zero while driving but still runs (on battery power I assume) for some time. I could fix the problem by tapping on the alternator with a hammer. I was planning on replacing the alternator but have been using this quick fix for a month now.

This morning I started up my jeep tapped on the alternator and accidentally tapped the terminal on the alternator and shorted it. The engine stopped and now won't start. All the accessories work, engine turns over, but with no spark. I've disconnected the alternator, still won't start. I checked the ASD relay and it seems to be functioning correctly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Trace the wires from the alternator back and look for a blown fusible link wire.

Thanks for the responses, going to check the wires. I'm definitely going to replace the alternator. I was just wondering why I wasn't getting any spark even with a charged battery and the alternator disconnected. Does this make sense?

I had this happen on my 3.1 Camaro. I left the lights on and drained the battery so i hooked it up with jumpers, it cranked and cranked but wouldnt start. (I had been having alternator problems as well). I let it sit, then came back and pulled the ECM fuse to reset the computer and then put it back in. It started right up!
