Wont start

Ronnie Crymes
I have a 1999 xj classic that I have swapped the motor in with a 1997 motor and everything went back together great but will not start it does crank and has fire but won't start , took it to dodge to check computer but all showed good so it even has the tech stumped. looking for some answers .
Ok I used a 1997 motor or that's what I was told, I took everything off of 99 and put on the 97 all parts fit with no problems, flex plate, distributor, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, new trimming gear, used same computer from 99 in other words I started with a long block and put all of my 99 accessories on it . So at start up we noticed fuel pump wasn't priming so checked pump and it was bad so installed new pump with fresh fuel so now engine turns over and tries to start but don't so I took it to dodge dealership and they put it on their computer and all readings are perfect , it's firing, injectors are working good you can smell gas after you crank for a wile they even sprayed fuel down air intake and still does the same thing. thanks looking for help Ronnie.
By the way the intake on the 97 was a throttler body but i changed it to the 99 witch was the newer fuel injection.

Got spark?

Ronnie Crymes 08-13-2018 08:26 AM

Yes , Spark is good, pulled plugs couple of times to clean them incase they were trying to fowl out hooked them up and tested before installing them and they had a nice blue fire showing up.

Was the distributor indexed properly, and is the firing order correct?

Ronnie Crymes 08-13-2018 01:06 PM

yes, we checked it 2 times pulse the dealership also checked it.

Are the valves opening and closing? Timing chain broke? Gas spark and compression, its gotta go. Question is is the spark showing up at the right time. CKPS, CPS, ...chain...Any codes?

Ronnie Crymes 08-13-2018 01:59 PM

pulled valve cover and checked valves (all good) installed new timing chain dbl checked tdc on #1 everything good on it , getting fuel, pulled injectors and turned engine over and they were working fine, compression was checked by dealership they said it was perfect, dealership also hooked to their computer and said everything showed fine including all timing spark, gas ect. and no codes showed up at all, this is why we are pulling our hair out and I don't have much of it to lose.

well one thing is for sure. something isn't right. bad gas? try putting some in the TB. Have you ever seen this engine run?

Ronnie Crymes 08-13-2018 02:13 PM

put fresh gas when we changed fuel pump, put fuel in intake but still acted the same, turn over but no start, it ran 5 yr's ago and has been stored until now.

97grand4.0 08-13-2018 02:17 PM

hmm. so it has the known good pcm from the 99 in it? How about changing the crank position sensor and the cam sensor just for giggles.

97grand4.0 08-13-2018 02:20 PM

OOohhh wait a minute. If the bell housing for the 99 has the crank sensor in a different spot than the 97 it won't trigger the crank sensor at the right time?

Ronnie Crymes 08-13-2018 02:31 PM

going on what the dealership said all of the sensors were reading correct he even said that all readings that that he looks at showed that there is no reason for it not to run. I will try changing the cps and ckps.

97grand4.0 08-13-2018 02:54 PM

Yeah they will read ok because its triggering, just not at the right time, that is if the bell housing locations are different. Are they the same transmission?
