Default Wiring problem help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright so, i think i found my wiring problem to why my dash panel wasnt lighting up of my shifter lights. I put a volt meter on in the 5a fuse and got no reading except .01. Now i did take the radio out, so what is my problem!??!!??!

I think your removing of the radio may not be the cause. Dash panel illumination runs on power through Fuse #6 (a 5 amp fuse) which comes first from the dimmer switch, which needs the headlamp switch to be turned on first (parking or headlamps). Was your headlamp switch on when you took the voltage measurement? Is the dimmer turned down/up all the way? Check these things: Headlamp switch ON, Dimmer cranked UP. Not sure? Crank dimmer one way, then the other, while measuring voltage at fuse #6. If still getting nothing then you might need a new headlamp switch.

Do you have a Chiltons, Haynes or, best of all, the Factory Service Manual for your year/model? If not then it's bucks well-spent as long as you plan on keeping your XJ.

Headlamp switch removal is easy but not exactly straightforward for first-timers. If you must remove it then, after it's out, try to add a jumper (paper clip) across the two wire contacts of the small connector and, with the large connector still mated to the switch, pull the plunger (switch ON) so you can test (or observe) for illumination/power.
