96 differential carrier replacement
I have an 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport and the rear differential went out, the carrier is a Dana 35 with a gear ratio of 3.55. I purchased a used spicer 35 with a gear ratio of 3.55. When I got home I could see that the carrier cover on the one I had was smaller than the one I had purchased and I also noticed that the axle housing diameter was bigger and it measured about 1" bigger in diameter. I took the carrier cover off and the ring gear was bigger in diameter and the splines were also bigger. My question is if I install this differential rear end on my Jeep will it work and not ruin the 4 wheel drive?

The smaller cover is off of my Cherokee
One thing I noticed about the ring gear is the splines are going in the opposite direction
Also you notice that thegap between the splines is larger
Another shot of the carrier cover
This carrier is out of my Jeep
This is the carrier in the housing that I purchased
Here are some pictures, think I just might be going back to the used parts store.

The "splines" you are talking about are the gear teeth. The gears are the same direction you just have them butted together on opposite sides. The new one like stated above is a chrysler 8.25 and not a Dana 35. Parts will not interchange but the 8.25 is a common upgrade many Jeep owners make.
