Will This Work?

I bought a used trailer hitch off of Craigs List. Hitch came from 94. I have a 95. Hitch has all the nuts, bolts and washers, but does not have the 2 nut plates that are inserted inside each rear rail.

It's a Valley Hitch and I called them, but they don't seem to have time to return my calls.

I think I can make the nut plates. I'll use some 3/16 or 1/4 plate to make the strips. Then use the hitch as a template to create the holes in my plates. After that, I'll weld my nuts to the plate. (yes, I know that's funny)

What do you think? Possible?

Sounds like a plan..

I think JCR Offroad also offers their version of the nutstrips if you wanna save some time. Or a Jeep dealer..

Yep..

Thanks OverlandXJ. That's real tempting. I'm gonna take a shot at making some this weekend. If it doesn't work, at least I have a back-up plan.

I would go with JCRs before you go to the dealer. I need a hitch for mine and my father (Jeep Parts salesman) said he could get the nutstrips at his price for like $50 each.

Yeah my local dealer wanted $40 a piece for the nutstrips. All XJ's have them on the passenger's side already, but I wasn't paying that for the driver side strip.

I just got some grade 8 hardware from lowes and held the nuts inside the rail with a long box end wrench and tightened the bolts up.

I made my own in the way you are describing. Just used the hitch I made as a template to drill some holes then welded nuts to the strip.

Make em yourself if you don't feel like shelling out the cash, but there is no need for anything thicker than an 1/8"

goto a JY got what i needed for $4 bucks a piece saves alot of time and headache. IMO

Should work out just fine. I just took the bumper off and put grade 8 bolts into the uni rail and was able to fit a wrench in there to snug them up.

Thanks for the replies. Got the hitch put on today.

Made my own nut strips. Used grade 5 hardware. 3/16 strips. Used the hitch as a template for the strips. Welded the nuts to the strips. Also used Locktite (medium) on the bolts. 3/16s strips was probably overkill, but at least I don't have to worry about it coming off.
