Default Will a 1995 NP242 main shaft fit a 1989 NP242

I have 2 jeep cherokee's one is a 1989 which I wrecked and a 1995 my daily driver, the 1989 has a NP242 transfer case and alot of my driving is done on road and Iam thinking of swapping out the main shaft for a 1995 so I can fit it to my 1995, I can then use the full time 4x4 on road when the weather is bad, I work night shift so if it snows iam gona get the coldest time of day, so does anyone know if the 1995 main shaft will fit a 1989 np242. I have to drive about 70 miles to work and want to make the journey in bad weather easier and safer.

Main shaft as the shaft itself? It would prob be easier swapping the whole case from one the other if everything under is right.
Besides swapping the linkage and shifter section, yes it will work, but you may have to do some swapping parts internal wise. 89 more then likely will be a 29 spline and 95 a 32 spline input shaft ma be different in size also, electric vs mech speedo, gear cut may also play a factor. But other then that it can work it just takes the time to swap what you need to the other one.

The 88 input is 21 spline & the 95 is 23 spline.

But they might just swap. I think they do, but don't know for sure.

I know there is a difference in the spline counts that's why iam looking at swapping the main shaft on the tc but I have been looking at the overhaul kits and there is a different bearing wide or narrow depending n year so was trying to find someone who had done it. Also thought about just going to wreckers yard and see if I can find an NP242 from a 1991 or newer then it would save me alot of messing about.
