Why do I have to hold the hatch down to get the tail gate to release on 99 XJ? What parts are worn that need to be replaced?

If you have to "push" in on the tailgate and pull the latch at the same time, there is a relatively easy fix.


If that is the problem, there are videos of how to fix it. The link does not work now, just do a google search of "how to repair a 99 jeep xj tailgate latch" and you will get a list of video's and tips on the job.

I have this problem sometimes.

 

Video works, but you have to have to remove the "_channel=BleepinJeep" at the end of the link for the video to post.

Here is the video. Have fun getting the panel off if the hatch wont open.

 

Had to adjust this after I got rear-ended. Thankfully my panel was already off. Super easy to adjust the "hitch" and the "bumpstops" on either side... should fix it.

I added the google search info to the post that turned up the video to make it easier. I have done this or a variation of this fix to my 99XJ. Easier then fighting the hatch open.
