Default why does it still leak!!!???

98 AW4 231

I recently swapped out my old 242 for a 231, I replaced the rear output shaft seal because it was bad. But it still leaks! A brand new seal, and it leaks from the inner rubber part where it grips around the driveshaft. What could be causing this? Bad seal? Something with the driveshaft? I just don't know! Help!

check the slip yoke on the driveshaft and make sure there isnt any burrs that arent tearing up the seal. Also, when installing the driveshaft after replacing the seal, i always lube the slip yoke. Thus it will reduce the chance of the seal inverting when the slip yoke is pushed in,...

Take some mild sand paper and wrap it around the shaft by the burrs and spin it with your hand. That will take the burrs out and lesson ... not remove ... the chance of throwing the whole shaft off balance and messing things up.

The bushing in the tailhousing is most likely worn out.

Is it possible that the driveshafts for a 242 and a 231 are different lengths? Reason I ask is it appears the my driveshaft (used with a 242) doesn't enter far enough into the 231 to meet the inner ring of the rear output seal, which i believe is a very good reason for it to be leaking like it does.
