What's a Bar Pin Eliminator? Why do I need one? What is Shock Thump? How does a BPE fix it and..........

After I make some BPE's how do I figure out what shock I need by measuring? People say that after you install the BPE's top and bottom you have more Options what does this mean??????

I'm buying shocks, its the last peice of my kit I need to acquire and I would like to install some BPE's but I only kinda understand thier purpose.

Any help from some of the "senior" members.

More options means that there are more shocks out there on the market that DO NOT have a bar pin.

Thru-bolt top and thru-bolt bottom.

Stock XJ's have:

Front: Upper- stud and lower bar-pin
Rear: Upper- bar-pin and lower thru-bolt

Alot of aftermarket manufacturers make only double thru-bolt style shocks.

The reasoning behind BPE is to have the ability to have all 4 corners of your suspension utilize the SAME shock. For the most part it can be summed up in one word: Uniformity.

Nothing worse than having to compromise the quality of the shock you "like" for one that "fits"

BPE's You dont have to make them you can get them at auto zone or advance auto and I think napa has them to they run around 5 to 7 bucks

bar pin eliminators are a shaft, usually 5/8" in diameter that connect to two pillars with holes in them so that they can be bolted in the same place as the bar pins in the shocks would normally be. The finished product, bolted in, produces a nice solid bar to go through the eyes of a shock. 5/8" is used because that is the size of an eye that is used in a number of longer shocks and most of the aftermarket shocks. Manufactured BPEs look like this:

But there are other configurations such as the ones made from rear sway bar mounts

so for "normal" shocks you need the BPE in the back and a BPE in the front with a STUD Eliminator?

OK so lets say I've done all that how do I figure out what shock to buy. I mean I can't must go to the shock store and say I need shocks for a jeep cherokee anymore. Do I buy them by length with a "bolt through" on each end? I think I could make some bpe's cheap for the front and use my swaybar hardware for the back. and I think that if I bend a little "U" for the top front and bolt it in then use the "bolt through" all the way around.
