My Jeep has had a whistling exhaust since I bought it. I am almost positive it is not anything near the engine (although I might be wrong, I am 90% sure it is my muffler/exhaust) it does have a new tailpipe on it and a new muffler (I think it is, it looks pretty new). It will whistle when I idle and when I drive, whenever I have my windows open and I drive past a building or guard rail or something I can hear the whistling noise. It's not really a big issue.....I hope, it's just annoying and really bothers me. By the way, I have searched other threads and some people are posting that their engines sound like they have turbos, it's not that loud. You really can't hear it unless you try to pay attention to it. So, for example, if I'm talking to somebody while outside of my jeep I can't really hear it. I hope that helps!

Its called a Jeep thing. Ive never heard an XJ that DIDNT whistle. Honestly, lots of them in my town, and I live right on a corner and any time one comes by I think its my wife coming home and look out the windows.

mine did this when i bought it and i tracked it down to a joint in my exhaust where the muffler was replaced. replaced the clamp and tighned good and no more whistle

Could be a Jeep thing but my last XJ didn't whistle. Oh well...


I'll check my muffler joints, but it for no reason just stopped whistling today. I'm confused, but whatever it stopped...maybe it was just the cold weather

Every XJ Ive ever seen/heard makes a whistling/whining noise, especially at slower speeds, and it does sound like the whining of a turbo. Maybe its not the exhaust.

mine whistles when im getting on the pedal in low gears...but thinks its something with my ax15 not working properly
