Whining sound coming from front wheels/axle? Please Help?
I have a whining noise that starts when I reach about 20 - 25 mph and continues until I comes to a stop. It won't start again until I get around 25 mph. Obviously, since I'm in the car, I can't tell exactly where/what it is coming from. It sounds like it is coming from the somewhere in the wheels or it could be the axle as well. I think it is coming from one or both the wheels though. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? If so, is it something I can drive on for a little while? I have a job where it is real tough during the week to work on my jeep or get it fixed, and it just started happening today. Thanks for any info!

Thanks for the info. Does that mean I would have to replace the whole hub assembly? Is it safe on drive on for a while?

I just had this issue. Is your jeep lifted? You didn't say in your post. I would jack up the front end and check front wheel bearings. If you are lifted you probably are a late series xj and need an SYE. I know that fixed my problem. I had a TC drop but that wasn't keeping it from whining.

Yeah, I lifted it last February with a 3" lift. I have had no problems up till today. It has been a real smooth ride. I'm starting to think it's my front wheel bearings going bad.

Either the unit bearing or the double cardan in the front DS. Grease might be the problem in the DC, but you'll have to replace the unit bearing. You can drive on it for a while, but if it fails catastrophically it can fly apart and send the wheel on its own way. Fix it sooner than later, but make sure you isolate it first. Unit bearings are not cheap. $130+ from any auto parts store. put it on jackstands front and rear and pop in in 4wd and let her spin and you can listen from there.
