When to install transfer case drop
How high can I go before I need to drop the transfer case down an inch or two?

A whole bunch of people use them (transfer case drop) but I personally don't like the idea of using one.
You are trying to gain ground clearance by lifting the vehicle, only to give it back up by dropping the transfer case?
In some cases you will need to drop your t-case linkage also, at the very least you'll have to realign/readjust it to work properly.
Everyone's results will vary, but I have 3.5" lift, and don't run a SYE or a t-case drop.
I go offroad alot where there is rocks here in Colorado, and I would never even consider a t-case drop.
They do sometimes help with driveshaft angles if you run into vibration issues after you lift.
If you do decide to run one, make sure you have some good bash-protection under your t-case.

I think the golden rule is above 4 inches, but every XJ is different. I put a 3" lift on mine and had to drop the TC. It is a cheap and easy solution, but a SYE is the best option. The only reason I did TC drop is because I don't have the weather to do one right now. Also pulling together the funds to purchase a good SYE and CV driveshaft that I couldn't install for another 3-4 months just doesn't make sense to me.
