Unhappy Whelp, found the cause of my transmission leak..

Hello all,

I've had this transmission leak for around a month now, and lately, its been really dumping out fluid. I'm looking to sell the xj really soon, so I figured I'd tackle it next weekend. Now, everything is really drenched down there, but it seemed to mostly be dripping from the t-case cross member. Thinking it was a rear seal, I bought a UV die kit (which worked great BTW-would highly recommend), but what I found was way worse:

Yep, that's a big ol crack in my casing, right behind the bell housing on the driver side.

Again, I'm looking to sell this so I need some advice. I imagine listing it as it is is probably not a solution, because the hit I'll take will probably be alot greater than the cost it will take to put in another transmission. So does anyone have an idea as to the level of involvement it will take to swap in a another one, and how long it will take me? I do have all the necessary tools, but I haven't tackled something this big. Also, seeing as I have a 97, can I only swap in a aw4 from another 97? As far as cost, how much will it be to pick one up at a junkyard? Are there any other alternate options?

Thank you

Oh and if you're in the Colorado Springs area and looking to buy an xj with a cracked transmission, let me know

Well, did some searching and it looks like, because 97 was a weird year for the Cherokee, only a transmission from another 97 will bolt in, and anything else will require modification. Can anyone confirm this?

If it can't be welded this will answer your questions:

It's not a bad job to take it out. Get your new transmission ready to go, and you can have it done in a day. Half a day, probably.

As for swapping, see the link that 4WD posted, where you'll find this gem:

1997, the AW4 is exactly the same as the 1990.5-1996 units, except the electrical connector for the wiring harness changed. A simple cut and splice will solve this problem
Say hi to the Peak for me. It's been a while since I lived there.
