Wheel spacers
So, I found out the hard way my rear axle is apparently from a Grand Cherokee. I've got 265/75r17s on my 99 XJ right now. Bought some stock 15" five spoke rims and almost new tires off Craigslist, also from a 99 XJ. Went to the tire shop, they bolted them up. I went to back out of the bay, vroom vroom vroom - didn't move at all. Checked my E-brake, found it wasn't on. Checked to see if they had chocked my tires somehow, which they hadn't.
At that point, one of the techs came over and asked what they problem was. I told him I wasn't moving, tried again, at which time he saw that the rear wheels were hitting the calipers. OOPS! Guess I'll have to figure out some wheel spacers now. Probably not that far off, maybe 1/4" or so from clearing the calipers... |
If you use wheel spacers, get the kind with studs included on them. Don't get the thin ones that just go over the stock studs and you bolt the wheels on it. Those SUCK.

A wheel spacer isn't going to work. you need 16" wheels.

It will take at lest a 5" spacer to clear the caliper. They don't make them. You need 16s
|
We'll see, I don't have them yet. I looked at where it was rubbing, and it appeared to be only about 1/4" from clearing the outermost point of the caliper.

try to be as far away as possiible just to be safe..
|
wtf are you all talking about? im confused. post a pic.
|
Take a grinder and grind down the caliper a bit until it fits if you cant find a spacer......
Also pull the wheels off and see where it's hitting the calipers..... |
OK, I will post some pics tomorrow. It's cold, dark, and I'm sick right now.

I photographed the caliper the best I could, given the 17s are still on there. There are silver rub marks on the edges of the caliper that stick out the farthest. Also, the back of the rear wheel that rubbed against that caliper. You can see a fresh rub mark in the center of the photo.

Sorry that last photo sucked.

OH yeah then wheel spacers will fix that. 1" spacers should do fine.
I though maybe they were rubbing on the inside of the wheel and that would require 16's. Why are there two different wheels in those pictures? |
