Default What year engines will bolt straight into my 99?

A friend of mine offered to rebuild a 4.0 for my 99 sport. Went to a you pull n pay today and they have a couple of 98's, a couple 97's and a few early 90's. Just curious which years would bolt straight in with no modification.

97-99 will a direct fit. 91-96 will work with a few minor modifications.

my 2000 sport has a 96 motor in it. but mine is coil pack and the 96 was distributor. just swapped the cam sensor and be sure to use 99 year intake/exhaust gaskets. i had 96 gaskets for mine and the exhaust leaked major. sounded like a tractor. other than that bolted right in.

Weird, I used 95 gaskets on my ZJ when I swap a 99 intake and had no leaks.

Great, thanks. I will pull one of the better 97's or 98's then. Any other advice before we do this?

Replace all of the seals and gaskets along with all new hoses, thermostat, and water pump. Also not a bad idea to replace the core plugs too.

I think you need to reuse your head for all the alt/ac/ps/etc. to bolt up correctly.

It depends on what head you have on your "99" I found that out on mine.

i couldn't reuse my head because it was cracked. so i had to make brackets to go on valve cover studs to hold on the coil pack. and also as mentioned above replace all gaskets/hoses and the thermostat and water pump if needed. also might want to throw in a new crank sensor cause those are pitas to get to anyway.

91-99 are all easy to swap. Don't limit yourself to 97-99. Just swap the intake, power steering and other brackets as needed. Very easy with the motor out.
