Cool What would/should you pay in today's Inflated Market?

Evening all,

I have been looking for a stock Jeep Cherokee as a daily driver, so I can focus on upgrading my current '92 XJ, with all the goodies that every owner can think of to turn their standard 3" lifted Cherokee into the bad boy off-road only vehicle they dream of.

I have narrowed it down to the below requirements: (I'm asking for a lot i know)
  1. Between 98-01 (plan to upgrade the 0331 Cylinder head of course on the 00-01)
  2. Below 100k miles
  3. 4x4

I am seeing prices all over the place, I know the current market is a little inflated right now, however, I want to see what you think would be a good price for a clean XJ with the above requirements. I intend of keeping it, for a long time, but want some resale value eventually.

If you can find one with under 100k - that I think will be the challenge - I would expect to pay about $4-5k in most of the U.S.

I think you need to lower your mileage expectations... There are a lot of Jeeps out there, but not many with those kind of miles...I think you need to look at 150-200,000 miles with a good body and underframe.
If these engines are taken care of they will go 300 plus...
My recent purchase, 222.221miles, had sat for 8 years ...With a little starter fluid and a little luck its up and running on a qtr tank of 8 year old gas and octane boost !! And this WASENT taken care of..
It has more to do with how it was taken care of than the number of miles...IMHO..

Thanks Gents for your answers, I know looking for sub 100k XJ's is asking a lot, but i intend of keeping it a long time.

I have seen super clean sub 100k '99s & 01's for around $5k-$6500, which for what you're getting is surely on the high side. But then again, in AZ they're becoming a rarity and seem to be getting swooped up before they're on the market long.

Would i be getting shafted if i did pay around $6k for the '99 sub 100k XJ? I know that's the "most desired" year (98-99), and, as you said above, these will last me a good while.

The prices op stated seem good to me. If I could find an xj w/ that mileage for 6k I would buy it.

Latest model year at the lowest price and mileage would be my buying criteria though.

The 0331 is a issue for some, all xj's have problems.

The pre 2k XJ's have spark plug wires for example, lol!

Buy what makes you happy, the prices stated sound fair.

Price is the very last issue in any negotiation, you are approaching this matter in entirely the wrong fashion.

I paid $3200 for mine this past November. It’s a 96 with 92k mikes on it. But, the mileage was not the main thing I was looking for. I wanted one with no rust and no leaks into the inside of the cab and as stock as I could get it. The paint is destroyed on mine, for the miles on it. Other than some areas on the under carriage with surface rust, nothing is rusted through. Just what I was looking for. It’s also bone stock and was only about 30 minutes from my house. All pluses for what I was looking for. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I feel lucky getting it for that.

Any XJ that is "close" to rust free is going to demand a higher purchase price.

I paid 5k for mine w/around 170k on it about four years ago, It was solid.

Do you want a stock or lifted XJ? You will find some well taken care of and you will find pieces of junk. I would recommend looking for a stock jeep with as little rust as you can find. Then do with it what you want.

Thanks All - I would definitely prefer stock. I love the stock look. Mileage is not the be all end all, but definitely a major part of how much i would pay. Especially if i am looking at $6k+. Rust and issue free of course are very important too.

It sounds a lot like, people will pay what they think it is worth, which makes sense. Especially with our "Legendary" on/off road capabilities.

If it's rust free and has zero issues it will cost you 6k because that's so rare. You don't buy a Jeep because it makes sense financially, you buy it because you like it. Where I live people pay 7-10k for a 15 year old stock Wrangler with 200k. For the same price you could get a nice Lincoln MKZ with 100k, like new interior/exterior and sometimes with a warranty from the dealer. Yep Jeeps sure are ripoff but dang it they're fun to drive!

I've got a 99 XJ that is nearly stock.. even has a factory LSD. and I just turned over 99k on it and almost entirely rust free.

I waited until I found what I wanted. Lucked up and found a 98 sitting stock with 144k with an extensive record of maintenance and only a few rock chips with surface rust. A guys daughter inherited it after her father passed and she didn’t want it. I paid $1,700
