Default What Type of Motor Oil?

Hi Guys, I have a Black, 1995 Jeep Cherokee, SE, 4.0 Litre 6 Cylinder High Output Engine, Two Door, Two Wheel Drive. I haven't been with this Jeep in roughly three years, and it hasn't been started since either. I just got it yesterday and I need to drain and re-fill all the fluids. What type of Motor Oil does my Jeep take? And how much? The sticker on the Oil Cap is missing and I'm not taking ANY chances. Some people say 10W30. But I want a person that knows exactly what oil to put in. Also, all the AntiFreeze and Coolant and all that has evaporated...What should I do about that? I'm only fifteen.

it uses 30w, rather it be 10-30, 5-30 or just 30w, all the same at operating temp. the difference is in cold flow, as a general rule the smaller the first number the better. the book actually states 10-30 but 5-30w would be my choice due to the better cold flow. if it's a standard 4.0L you will have a 6qt fill capacity.

as for the radiator, if it's went crusty and sat for awhile i personally would pull the thermostat, bolt the housing back on and start the truck with a garden hose in the radiator and the drain valve open, and or pull a hose. flush for a minute or two, then drain all you can before you refill.

this is also a perfect time to replace the thermostat and gasket for $5

There is no one right answer. It depends on the CLIMATE you are operating your XJ in. Somebody in Hawaii would not have the same oil demands as somebody during winter in Alaska!

I follow the recommendations from the design engineers on this one. I see no need to deviate from that.

*For temperature primarily ABOVE 60 degrees farenheit, 10-30

*For temperature primarily BELOW 60 degrees farenheit, 5-30

5W30 should be fine for Rhode Island. Modern oils all get to the same "30" at operating temperature anyway. If you were somewhere warmer both 5W30 and 10W30 would be appropriate.
