Any idea what that transfer case is? Looks like it could be a 231.
Its local, so if its a 231 i'd want to put it in my 1993. Anyone see any problems with that?

He confirmed the tag says 231J. Its comming from a 1998 and i have 93.
So, I figured out they should both be 23 spline, but what do you make of this?

Throughout the production run, input spline counts and other internal specs changed, and must be compatible with the transmission it's mated to. The later model cases (1996.5 and newer) changed styles of rear slip yoke to an internally sealed version.

Is this true with the 231, and will it cause problems with a swap?

You'll be fine. The rear slip yoke just has a small difference in the design.

That trans/transfer came out of an XJ, it's an AW-4 and NP transfer which he id'd as a 231. The tailcone tells you it's a 97+, making it 23 spline. It should bolt directly to your 93.

I picked it up today. Where is the 21/23 spline count?
I counted the splines on the rear output (to driveshaft) and it came up 27.....

Is the 21, 23 count somewhere else, or did I get a 27 spline NP 231J which i didnt think existed?

TY

The front input... where it mates to the rear output shaft on transmission. Theres 5 or 6 bolts/studs (circular pattern) that attach the transfer to trans.

23 spline input gear
