What trans better for off road and why
I am considering a used 88 Cherokee with a 5 speed for off roading. I am good driving either auto or standard but was thinking the auto might be better as you can run brake and throttle with each foot. Your thoughts?

The automatic is easier on the drivetrain and easier to drive in sticky situations, but is more likely to leave you stranded on the trail if something fails. You can almost always get home with a manual if there is a failure. I prefer an automatic because I'm kind of lazy.

Arguably the largest advantage to the auto is when crawling on things like rocks, where it is necessary to have 4 wheels of braking power at the same time. I drive a 5 speed and do enjoy it off-road, though I know that many do prefer the auto overall. In my opinion, it depends on the terrain and style of off-roading that you do.

The thumb throttle is a thought I hadn't had and the idea of the standard being more reliable is to be considered as well. My old off road days I had a Toyota truck with a 5 speed and never found it a hindrance. Of course I was young and crazy then too. Seems an auto would suit me more off road although I still prefer a standard on the road
