Default What are these doodads? I have pictures

Does anyone know what these are? The white arrows point to the doodad I'm asking about.

First, I found this wiring tail out of the main harness that runs along the top of the firewall. I don't know where it goes...or whether it is just a extra doodad that goes nowhere.

Next, there appears to be a silver-colored Schrader type fitting at the back of the AC pump. What is it? What is it for? And there is another fitting 90 degrees from that silver one, black in color. What is this for?

Next, there is another object bolted to the firewall in the third pic...no idea what that does. And a little white plastic doodah - the cap moves. No idea what that thing is either.

Finally, I found this little bracket in the parts box. No clue where it goes.

Can anybody identify these and tell me what they're good for?

1. Wiring for underhood light
2. not sure..
3. Map sensor and white cap is breather for front axle. As it builds pressure it'll burp out excess.

in the second picture those are the air conditioning service ports.

Third is the breather for the front axle like OverlandXJ said and maybe the voltage regulator?

Forth looks like the said hood light bracket

Ahhh. That all seems reasonable.

The AC service ports - is it possible to tell if the AC system has it's charge or must I take it to a shop (special tools, etc.)?

I have not noticed an underhood light...I'll go look for it...but it makes sense that that tail is the fitting for it and the bracket makes sense, too.

Thanks, gentlemen.

Yes you need to either purchase a set of gauges and cans of R134A or take it to a shop to charge the AC system.

Does the AC work? If not does the compressor kick on? AC can be an expensive endeavor.

That is an R12 system.
Third picture is the MAP sensor and front axle vent.

No, the AC does not work...but the car came from southern California and the DPO did not appear to defer maintenance. If the AC was not working, he'd have it fixed. So I'm thinking the system is OK and there is a simple problem. I just don't want to pay a shop to tell me the AC system "needs a charge". If it needs charging it is because it LEAKS and I don't want to pay to make the leak stop...unless it is really a cheap fix.

On the other hand, the DPO removed the radio for some reason, I assume because it didn't work, and he might have knocked off some wires for HVAC in the process. All the underhood stuff looks excellent. I'm hoping it is a simple fix.

I'm in Michigan so AC is not a big deal but I'd rather have it working than not. I was hoping I could test pressure somehow at that silver valve at the back of the pump but I guess its not possible.

Is there a reason to convert it - has R12 been outlawed?

BTW, how can you tell it is R12?

Forgot to mention - the compressor does NOT kick on and I don't know how to diagnose it. Don't know where to start.

The charge port fittings are different from a R134A system. The compressor will not come on if the system is low on refridgerant. You don't have to retro the system, you can still use R12, but it cost quite a bit more than R134A. I would fix the leak and keep the R12 because it would cost the same, or maybe less, as doing the retrofit to R134a correctly.
Have a shop do the work. It is not for the DYI kind of person if they have not ever worked on A/C before.

94 and newer XJs have R134. Not sure if the 93ZJ has R134A or R12, but the 94 and newer ZJs use R134A too.
