Since I trailer my rig to the trail I am minimalistic in what I carry on the trail. On the trail I carry a radiator/hose repair kit, full size spare, tools to change axle shaft, and pull a driveshaft.

ON the trailer/tow rig, I carry spare driveshafts front and rear, u-joints for axles and driveshaft, serpatine belt, spare front axles, spare steering parts. I also have a roll of tie wire, electrical repair box( connectors and different length wire),

I am a firm believer in " If you wheel you should know how to fix your stuff", and I also believe in preventitive maintenance, and not being "that guy". I hate pulling up to the trail head and there is always one, who doesnt know how to disconnect his sway bar, or knew he had an issue with his rig and isnt prepared to deal with it. ON my rig I know I have a dead short, and my battery dies over night. SO I carry a jump box with me... once I start... I dont shut it down.. no issue.

I x2 all this stuff..
  1. put your tools in a bag, not a hard tool box
    1. to reduce rattles (might want to use sleeping bag straps) sinchable 1 inch nylon straps with a clip.
  2. X2 zip ties (remember they can be daisy chained)
  3. duct tape (nothing sticks to duct tape like duct tape )
  4. electric tape
  5. white lithium in a spray can (find it at a dirt bike/atv shop)
  6. CB radio w/ a long range antenna (functionality over looks)
    1. Also good to have a handheld CB w/weather feature (good one)
    2. Also good to have a set of handheld walkie-talkies (cheap ones)
  7. survival gear
    1. 3 lighters
    2. matches (also)
    3. wool blanket (NOT cotton b/c cotton PULLS heat from the body when wet, wool does not)
    4. tent (new ones pack tiny)
    5. A sleeping bag (packable, NOT cotton)
    6. change of clothes (X2 THE DRY SOCKS!! maybe 2 backups)
      1. packups could save a life other than your own
    7. superglue (good for closing clean cuts)
    8. Iodine or rubbing alcohol
    9. Bandages (sticks the duct tape make for a good splint)
    10. A knife (a Leatherman or Gerber Multi-tool)
    11. X2 the BFH (big friggen hammer)
    12. A tarp 20x40 (if you can find a place for it)
      1. 5 trees (poles) stripped of limbs + 2 A-frames with a cross bar from one to another = a shelter
    13. Rope (PLEASE have a working knowledge of knots)
      1. 200 feet of half inch nylon line (never cut it(!) unless you HAVE to)
        1. For that matter: take a class at the local rock climbing gym.. buy the basics.. and keep it in a duffel bag
          1. eh.. what can I say, Im a climber for a living (arborist)
      2. 50 feet 1/4 inch nylon line (x2 the never cut it)
    14. rain gear (jacket and pants) non-tear spend the $$ its worth it
    15. garbage bags (for garbage & dry bags)
    16. zip lock bags (holds nuts/bolts) + all the other little stuff listed above
    17. compass (actually know how to use it, just dont HAVE one)
    18. a good topographical map
    19. water purification filter or tablets (tablets taste HORRIBLE)
    20. A winch(!) or at least a High-Lift Jack
    21. An axe (chopping axe, not a felling axe, NOT a wooden handle, they break or the head falls off)
    22. A shovel
    23. x2 tools for every bolt you have ever personally worked on.. knowing how to USE it helps.. I lack a bit here and there in that area
    24. wire, a wire stripper, a volt meter, a test light, heat shrink for wire
    25. flashlight and backup batteries (LED) Not a MAG necessarily
    26. headlamp x2 (or x3 for you and others)
      1. $9ea. @ Lowes, make sure you get LED
    27. Keys wrapped with strong rigid wire to the outside of the truck (not twist ties or electric wire, strong and rigid)
    28. an alternator
    29. jumper cables (x2 that)
    30. serpentine belt
    31. starting ether
    32. save a few longer old spark plug wires on your next tune up
    33. tire plug kit
    34. tire pump (or air compressor)
    35. on board welder (i wish)
SKID plates to protect the weak spots on the truck to make it so you never have to use the above list

You get what you pay for on the list above.. dont buy cheap.. you will buy it twice.

I am an EMT-B (you should know CPR), an arborist and I have paddled across 1/2 of Canada over 5 summers, 2.5 months at a time.. from Northwest Quebec to Lake Winnipeg. Ive nearly died several times and have saved ppls lives. The funny thing is you never know what you need until you need it..

The bottom line........ GO PREPAIRED !!! (even if it feels like overkill)

I'm BIG on proactive maintenance
