my 98 xj has a grinding noise in the rear that also whines making left turns. i just put new wheelbearings on front and back. still the same, took it to a mechanic let him drive it he said a carrier bearing or pinion bearing. i know nothing about working on differentials so should i be looking for a entire rearend at the junkyards or look for a place to replace the carrier and pinion bearings? can anyone give a rough estimate what it might cost me to have this done? its the chrystler rearend by the way. my dd please help!!

your quickest and cheapest way i would think would be swaying it out with another axle. and keep the old shafts for trail spares, or sell them to me!!!

you could do this but it could be as simple as the pinion seal on the back by the nut see how much he will charge to look at it if it is going to cost more then 100 to just tell you what it is then go junk yard hunting but remember you could end up worse than you started

some junkyards offer warranties, granted it maybe like a 30day, but its still something.

I dont think a pinion seal would cause it noise,... if its making noises, chances are the bearings are already toasted.

i would still see how much to fix it then go from there and yeah it is most likely the bearing

Somerset is in the middle of three Pull A Part jys, Nashville, Knoxville, and Louisville. You can check their vehicle inventory online at pullapart.com. I pulled a 8.25 reaerend out of complete drum to drum for 125$.

Sorry to hear bout the theifs in your area! shop around , a drive is always better than gettin ripped off. Craigs list is an option, check this forum (for sale) An axle swap is very easy, just make sure you get the same gear ratio as you have now!
