i just bought a 2000 jeep cherokee sport that needs ball joints, universals, u joints, wheel bearings and a pinion seal on the front axle. im looking for advice as to what i should do. i dont know if it has upgraded gears or not but should i rebuild this axle i have or just do an axle swap?
Ball joints will need to be replaced regardless, If you feel comfortable rebuilding this axle I would just do it. By the time you look and find an axle that does not need anything else you could have be done by then. But at the same time you never know what you will find that someone is selling.

I say to swap them also. If you can find axles out of 4cyl. XJ's you get factory 4.10 gears.

the rear axle is all rebuilt though. itd be a shame to swap it for another axle. i was feeling to just swap the front. however if i put it in theres a chance it might need something else like u are saying...but fixing mine just buying the parts is over 300 bucks...a axle from a junkyard is 250. thats my delima

in 18 years as an alignment guy a Cherokee is the only mid sized 4WD that I have NEVER replaced a ball joint on. never found a bad one! but the process is no worse than any other Blazer Ranger or fullsized 4WD; the rest? other than fighting a lil rust on the wheel bearings (gotta come off to do the U joints, ball joints dont) to me, anyway, the work you describe is a cakewalk.
