Yup, that's a Chrysler 8.25. Solid axle if you put some alloy shafts in it.

x2 what ever. Descent axle, but there aren't as many aftermarket parts for it.

Its an 8.25. Do Not weld it if it is driven on the street. Not much after market fo rthe 8.25 except for lockers, heavy duty shafts and gears, mainly because it is a good strong axle AS IS. You list having Auto trans so it should be gear at 3.55. 3.55 gears should be good up to 32" tire, then you might want to THINK about higher gears. The axle itself with proper gearing can handle up to 33" tires and a locker, 35" without locking easily. The real short coming of the 01 XJ is the low pinion front axle. But even then you'll be OK unless you are in to Heavy duty rock Crawling. By that you call a 1' high rock a pebble and a 2' boulder a stone and 3-4' ledge a stair step.

Yep - C8-1/4"

Two versions - 27-sp and 29-sp. I don't recall the break, but it was late 1990's (1996/1997?)

I do believe it's invariably a C-clip axle, so if you want to get silly with it a C-clip eliminator kit is highly recommended. Should be available anywhere that also sells 4xxx alloy shafts.

If memory serves, there's a gearing limit on the carrier somewhere around 4.56:1 - which is not a problem for most people.

The break was 96-97. I was a lucky one that got the 29 spline in 96! Also they now have 4.88:1 gears for the C8.25!
