what motors will be a direct "bolt up" to my '95 XJ?
i need a new motor for my xj which is a '95, due to a cracked block. now i want something that will just go right in and the harnesses will fit. i don't wanna do any modifications to make it fit. what year of XJ's will i be able to take a motor out of to get it to work?
thanks in advance!! Dylan |

Not many years though. The power steering bracket and belt routing changed in '96. I'm pretty sure the wiring harness didn't change until '99, so the '97 will plug in.
All the mounting bosses were the same until 2002. Also, '92 through '95 will bolt and plug right in. |
thanks for the help man!! now i know what to look for. got a few eyes out there searching for me! thanks again

well, the jeep died today :( i come outside after work and find a HUGE oil slick under it, get home, didnt drip a dot. which tells me theres none left in the engine, so it's sitting for a while, going to look at some engines at the end of the week... i'm pretty upset. here's the oil slick

Honestly, and no offense intended, if your worried about swapping a bracket or two and figuring out how the belt would route for a slightly different year, you might not want to undertake the swap by yourself. If the wiring harness are the same and If all the actual sensors an the same go for it. I am sure you can figure out the belt routing ect.

so after doing some searching, i think we found 3 motors... one the guy never called us back on yet, but here's what we have
4.0L I6 out of a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Has 220K, wants $200 4.0L I6 out of a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Has 120K, wants $300 now, i know the better, less hassel will be the 1993 motor, but buying off craigslist, i'm kinda iffy since i lost a gamble with my Jeep originally. But, would you guys buy a motor with 220K on it? for $200? idk how long a motor like that will last... i need some input here. thanks in advance, Dylan |
