what happened to my Reverse?

OK so my xj goes into reverse and sounds like I'm just reving my car in neutral. It does although have very very little power. Just enough for me to get a little momentum to get out of parking spaces. This issue was already here before I did my tranny oil change. I did not change my filter though. Dip stick shows I have correct fluid level. All my other gears shift normal. No slipping no nothing. And I forgot to add. My reverse works normally after my engine has been drivin for awhile.

ANY IDEAS ON WHY THIS IS HAPPENING? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

What year is your XJ? Which engine and transmission, and how many miles?

No reverse = Tranny failure.

My reverse will function normal after the engine warms up

Have you considered dropping the pan and checking the filter? If the tranny is eating itself you might see a lot of metal in the filter or on the magnet.
