Newbie question...how do I know what transfer case and axles I have.

It's a '92 XJ 4.0L Auto. The t-case has 2H, 4H (Part Time), and 4L. No full time 4H. NP231??

There's a little tag on one of the bolts on the rear axle that says "35". Dana 35??

I did a VIN decode = no help. Is there any way to know for sure?

Transfer case: Most likely a NP231 if its a 92 Theres also a tab on the T-Case where there are numbers stamped in and you should see New Process Gear 231.. Best way to tell what your differential is, is compare it to this photo. Your rear end is either going to be a ChryCo 8.25 Or a Dana 35, Unless youre one of the lucky ones who bought an XJ that someone had already done an axle swap in. But generally the ChryCo 8.25 Will have a visible lip underneath the bottom of the Diff Cover, as to where the 35 would not. Hope this helps!!

Sweet! It's a C8.25 rear and D30 front (I can tell from memory when changed the fuilds). I'll have to check out that stamp on the tcase. Thanks!!
