Default What do i need to replace?

So im planning on actually keeping my XJ WOOO WOO!!

Id like to make it safe and reliable. What do you guys suggest replacing or fixing for a rusty crusty 1990 from Illinois?

The front end feels pretty loose and theres a good amount of play in the steering. Any bushings that i should replace? Tie rod ends??

Spend a little money and have it inspected by someone that knows Jeep vehicles.

I bought a 95 Wrangler ..... took it to a deal and paid them $80 to inspect and create a 'hit list'.

The did it right .... with the most critical of repairs at the top of the list, then the list of 'suggestions' after that.

The last thing on their list was " repaint vehicle "

I told them up front, that what I wanted was an inspection to determine safety and drivability.

Having said that ...........

If you put a question out such as you have, people will post suggestions to replace lots of parts and may not even hit the right one.

VISUAL INSPECTIONS are the key ...... I like to look at the front end as steering is moved from one extreme to the other ..... do this several time to look at each component. Of course you have to know what you are looking at and what you are looking for.

You can also lift the vehicle up and inspect other components for wear, such as the ball joints.

Here again you have to know what you are looking at and what you are looking for,

Makes spending a little money for a professional to inspect sound cheap .... and it is.

^^^^

What he said.

Also, check for rust, first! Make sure you have something to bolt all the parts to that is solid and sound! If it's structurally unsound, re-think.

Rust is the one thing that will total a Jeep as stated have someone who knows look at it for all the spots that can't be repaired, they are the ones that you can't see just from standing back and looking at it. The area where you are is known for all the salt use in the winter and that is really bad.
