What to do....??
Well, the XJ I picked up I knew didn't run. Being told and hoping just the head gasket was finished I picked it up for a good price. Now I am sitting here with the head off staring at a freakin crack in number 2 cylinder wall.
I am under strict orders from the wife that this is a CHEAP toy...now I am stuck with a Jeep that doesn't run....and I need to do something with it. Any ideas?

part it out, at least break even and then toss a flare in the back seat. this way you can have a bonfire, and make back the money you lost, and find a running one

Keep on the lookout for another cheap or freebie. What year and motor do you have? I wouldn't waste time or money on a V6, but thats just me. There are lots of cheap Cherokees out there. Local ads here always have some for $500 and some less.
I got a nearly complete 87 for free, missing trans, transfer case and steering box. Front axle will go for the Ranger axle swap, tires and wheels were in excellent shape and going on my good XJ. The parts rig gave up a few parts while rehabbing my good XJ, and after I pull the remanufactured motor (certainly newer than the 200,000 miles on the body!!!), the body will be given to a friend to turn into a trailer. I look at it as"recycling"...

yea at this point your options are go to a junkyard, pull a complete 4.0 and swap it in. if anything throw it on an engine stand and go over everything!

Well... I have a few questions for you...
First.. What are you going to use this truck for??? If its gonna be a daily driver, let my kids run it, kinda thing keeping the 2.5 might be your best option.
But if it is gonna be built as a trail rig something with a little more HP is gonna be your best bet here.
Lets throw some options out here...
First, unless you like doing some 'creative' engineering on your firewall, and the replacement of the front of your Jeep, the 4.0l is not an option. The 84-86 XJ's have a slightly shorter engine bay and a different firewall design and a good deal of work is involved to make the 4.0l fit...
More later my supper is done.....

It's going to be a mostly trail toy. A road use to get to the trail heads if needed or trailered. It's the family toy basically...
