'96 Cherokee Sport 4.0L bought used. It ran fine for about a week then started acting up. Figured out there was no fuel pressure at the rail. Removed fuel filter and checked power to fuel pump. The pump was getting power but wasn't cutting on. Decided to replace the pump and in the process of removing it found out the pump and tank were filled with gunk.
Enjoy the pictures.

It doesn't have a locking gas cap (definitely getting one) so there's no telling what got inside the tank. If I had to guess I'd say water got in there at some point and rusted the you know what out of it.

i had a tank on a corvair i was doing someone poured roofing tar in to seal the tank...anything is possible...the pics are inconclusive.. someonemay have put something in it or that could just be rust from it being an empty tank with a little moisture in it

I would consider running a QUALITY fuel system cleaner after replacing tank and pump. Your fuel system is almost assuredly contaminated by the gunk in your fuel tank.
The best in the business for tough fuel system problems is BG44K. It is spendy, but worth it and it is what I would run in your engine.

Skip the cheap fuel cleaners that line the shelves of parts stores. Most of them are very ineffective.
Besides BG44K, I like Techron (by Chevron) and Seafoam. But I think your engine would be best served with a bottle of BG44K.

After resurrecting my Jeep after sitting for four years, the pump and tank looked exactly the same inside. I ordered a new pump and tank from Rockauto.com and cleaned the sending unit with carb cleaner. I think it cost me $150 with shipping.
