the check arm bracket (holds that pin) : part number 55002361
check arm pin (than thing that makes the sound in yours: 55012900
front door check (the thing that "connects"door and frame): 55265571
and to complete the parts: the lock nut needed: 55235571
These are the part numbers for a 1997, not sure if this item was a lot different in the pre-update Xj's. But I reckon you can buy parts, or a complete unit replacement if needed.
The brackets, and maybe the arms, are all the same between the doors. I got tired of the popping too(never seen an XJ that didn't have the pop on at least one door) and went to the JY and got the bracket from another XJ, but from the passenger door as they're usually used less. Pretty much eliminated my popping, however do to the bracket hole being wallowed the arm got a little wallowed too so I still need to replace that, but no more loud popping.
They're all the same from 97+ too. Even if they have different part numbers they're all going to be the correct part, so I would just pull what you need from a JY from any 97+ if you can.
My front driver door check arm broke at the base on the door so I couldn't mount a new one without welding a metal plate onto it. I just took it out and I am worried that if the door were to fly open when I open it (eg: a steep hill) could that damage the hinges the door is on? Could I just put in a door strap because I don't want to do anything fancy as it isn't worth it to me.
You could just strap the door. the Check Stop is to both prevent the over opening, and to create that place where the door HOLDS open. Remember your strap will stop that, but parked uphill you cant KEEP the door open either.
Junk yard for checkstops is best.
You dont want to brake your hinges, or even worse, break the PIN INSIDE the hinge.
