Default What is the best yr to buy?

like everything else what is the best year to buy for the cherokee? Most likely I will leave the motor stock( would like to do this) I would like to beefen up the trans and rear a bit so those really doesn't matter in what year to choose, in better words which motor is the best would like to keep it v8 but if the 6 is great that is fine with me.

Im trying to buy an offroad wagon, was looking at the H1 but some people im talking to are pushing me off those, telling me Cherokee's are the way to go

Maybe '96??????? Sold the most XJs that year. Who wouldn't want a H1 (original military). It's the H2, H3 that are simply a GM p/u underside with a square box body.

What do u mean "keep it V8"? Do u have a V8 in an XJ?

I have two 98s and a 94. The only flaw I see in them is they have dana 35s which are wimpy and prone to pinion wear and failure not to mention they have small tapered axles. The only electrical problem Ive had is the relay panel in the engine compartment and that was just a loose plug. The 4.0 I6 is a great engine and reliable with decent power and torque. All 3 of my XJs have over 170k and still run strong. Anything that you abuse is gonna have problems but if you keep up on maintenance it should run til the wheels fall off. And when they do... 97-99, upgraded axles and intake off the 99 is the most desirable of all the years and if you get it with the 8.25 in the rear then you'll be set. They also have the updated interior and exterior.

97-99 are widely accepted to be the best.

'99 Updated look, no 0331 head (prone to cracking in the '00 and '01), and the high pinion D30 in front.

I love my 97. Haven't gotten that leaky rear pinion seal fixed, yet, and I can't figure out what's wrong with the transmission range sensor, but other than that it's been solid as a rock. Love it.

My 97 has no electrical problems.... never seen one with electrical problems from 97, though I have seen alot of electrical problems on a couple 98's. Also know most of the sensors are alot more expensive in 98, I have no idea why they changed all the plugs that year.
