weak xj steering, possiable cheap fix? opnions?
hey i know xj's are notorious for there weak sterering when you lift them. my tie rod is bent pretty bad and im planning on welding a thicker steel pipe over a new stock tie rod, hoping that this will work out, rather than spending the money for a larger one. im planing on running 35's and going with a dual steering stabilizer kit hopefully this will be a stable setup rather than going with an expensive over the knuckel kit. what do you guys think?

Personally your wasting your time on welding pipe over it and doing a double steer stabilizer.
The stock tie rods really can't handle 35's. All your doing is asking to break more parts..

I'm using the rustys crossover kit with 8" lift and 35s it was around $200. I don't really recommend it due to the notorious tie rod roll with the inverted "T" steering. If I did it over again id go with either a currie tie rod upgrade or just get a rugged ridge steering conversion http://www.ruggedridgesales.com/Cros...it-PRD233.aspx its about the same price a rustys but will hold up a lot better to your 35s. Just don't go above 6" lift with that steering without going otk

Good deal were both on the college budget...nice...well as for an over the knuckle kit there are a lot of options. I really like the teraflex set up but your lookin at a lot of other mods to go with it. I would just recommend searching on google. There are tons of options and you can search other forums on the credibility of the product. I know most people like anything from JCR, teraflex, and I've been researching the rock krawler otk kit which is different but looks like it may work pretty well

I run UTK on mine at 6.5" lift. A beefier tie rod is all Ive done. no bumpsteer and its fine with me. Main thing is to have your drag link and track bar inline with each other.

just had the thicker pipe welded over the tie rod adjusting sleeve today. looks like you couldent break it if you tried. gonna put it on probably tomorrow, total was about 25 for the sleeve and 30 for the steel pipe

As a quick fix, it'll do. As a solution to weak steering, it's failure waiting to happen. Like I've heard it said, if you can't afford to do it right the first time, how can you afford to do it twice? I have seen that welded pipe thing fold like a taco on the trail. But some people have to learn the hard way instead of listening to the voice of experience. These guys (most of them) know what they're talkin about. Why ask if you're going to go with your original idea anyway?
