water temp???

I've just renewed my radiator in my 96xj 4.0 . Since I've done that my temp goes up to just above halfway then drops back right away, and then goes up and down as I drive. Engine does not feel real hot and is not bringing on my electric fan (fan does work). wondered if any of you guys had any ideas thanks.

when you say "half way up on the gauge" what the temp is that on the gauge? the movement is most likely your thermostat opening and closing.

halfway is 100 (am in scotland) but fluctuates really quick, once it gets warm, drops back quicker than when fan comes on

Did you replace your thermostat when you replaced the rad?

If by half way up the gauge you mean about 195-200/210 that is normal. I am in FL where it is hot as hell and even in dead heat of the day it stays about 12 o'clock(200) at lights it will go to almost 210 then drop as soon as I leave the light. I just replace my water pump last week, flushed my antifreeze, and before that it was at 210/215 all the time.

I'm at Pitlochry, thought stat was OK cause engine not getting too hot and when gauge goes up and down it does so too quick for electric fan to have made any difference. wondered if maybe electrical I notice in morning after car been lying all night my gauges still show readings and then drop off when switch ignition on.
