Default Voltage sensor

Hey guys. Anyone know where the voltmeter on the dash panel gets its info? Mine keeps showing about 18 volts. I test the voltage with my meter at idle and under load and showing 13.8 so i know im good. But id like to trouble shoot the sensor a bit to get that working right. Thanks guys.

I have the same problem after I took out the instrument cluster but the voltage is right so hopefully this can be figured out for both of us...Tj

I think that the volt gauge is the only one to get a direct feed and take the readings itself...I don't think there is a voltage sensor, simply a faulty gauge

was for me.

my 86 MJ was reading 11 volts, but the voltmeter read out 16 volts, which is right where the 145 amp alternator on the buick 3800 motor I installed should be running at...I looked at a few of my parts gauge clusters, and swapped through gauges until I found one that read accurately (enough).

the one thing about our gauges, is that they're more of a guideline...they never were all that accurate, and the years do show.
a set of nice performance gauges would be the way to go, IMHO
