VIN decode 87 Wagoneer(XJ version)

Found a Jeep Wagoneer Limited in a salvage yard but its more than an hour away and I was hoping to find out which axle it has under it before I go out there. The salvage yard people weren't much help but here is the VIN 1JCMT7549HT127125. Thanks for the help.

Unless they have been changed out at some point (which is quite possible) it should have a Dana 30 hp in the front and a Dana 35 in the rear.

Here's a chart to help i.d. by the cover shapes:

That's kind of what I was afraid of, I called the Chrysler dealer and they couldn't help me much, but that it had the extra trans cooling and tow package and that it had a 3.42:1 ratio which i have never heard of. Thanks.

Yeah, something isn't quite right. Don't see a listing for the 3.42:1 as a ratio in the D35 w/towing package in that model year. Got a pic?

Unfortunately the salvage yard worker i talked to refused to take a picture of the rear axle assy, but here is the ad. Maybe you can get some insight from it.

Sorry chief, doesn't help much. If you're close, why not just run down there? I'd be willing to bet it still has the Dana 35 under it. It looks bone-stock. Not a bad looking old XJ...not too sure about it having 3.42:1 gear ratio in it though. Seems a little tall for towing.

Its about an hourish away, I was hoping to get confirmation one way or the other. There are some other salvage yards around there so i might just stop by one of those too so as to not "waste" the trip if its not a D44.

The only way this unit would have a D44 is if someone swapped it. I'm not so sure I'd drive an hour either. I'd be willing to bet it's a D35. The D44 was stock in the Grand Wagoneers. Good luck!

Why go hunting for a dana 44 when the chrysler 8.25 is just as strong and super easy to find.

True, or find a D44 from a mid/late 90's GC with towing package. They came with D44's. Maybe he wants a D44 for a particular reason, idk...

Grand cherokee 44s a aluminum not very strong. 8.25 much better choice I run one with 38s no issues even got it from a 4cyl free 410 upgrade. Double score 125.00 of a 96 two door coccer mom. Plug and mud.

Yes, but he could truss the D44a. IDK what his plans are...

87 Limited with a 242 transfer case.

If it has a towing package, it could very well have a Dana 44 from the factory.
