Hey folks! I have a '97 Cherokee 4.0 with a coolant leak that isn't coming from the radiator or the water pump (I don't believe). The radiator was flushed out last week by a mechanic (at a shop, not someones house!) It is farther back of the engine on the driver side. Jeep has never overheated. There will be a small drops on the ground, maybe about 3 tablespoons in total, after I park. Also, when I first start driving after it has sat a few hours, there is a squeak for about the first 200 ft. No noises after. Generally speaking, the engine doesn't make any strange noises other than that. I am the only owner of this Jeep, so I kinda know the noises.

What are your thoughts?

I'd guess freeze plug if it's definately from the drivers side at rear of engine. There are 5 freeze plugs on side of block and one at the back of the head.

Get yourself a "mirror on a stick" and after parking it next time try to get a look and see if you can trace it.

But is the belt squeaking or is it something else,if your leaking from the back then the freeze or frost plugs would be my thought also,But if your belt is wet an causing the squeaking on start-up then I would say water pump weep hole.Looks like you got some hunting to do.Keep us posted.

 

Thanks Rich! Not exactly sure of the squeak location, but will advise the mechanic.

 

Is the noise you hear upon startup a constant squeal that goes away? If so it's probably the belt.

The spot where the coolant lands on the ground is not necessarily where it leaked out of. It could be running down hoses/wires/etc... before dripping off onto the ground.

The noise makes me think its leaking from somewhere up front and getting onto the belt.

The next time you drive it and get it fully warmed up pop the hood as soon as you shut it off in the driveway and start looking for where it is coming from. It may take a few minutes to start leaking.

 

Well fellas, 7 hours and $218 dollars later I have 1 new freeze plug. The mechanic was having a hell of a time getting the plug back in properly. I think he went through 4 of them total. I will now be keeping a close eye for any other leaks from the other plugs. Didn't notice the squeak when I picked it up, but it hadn't been sitting that long. Thanks again guys!
