Underdash wiring, Where do these 2 plugs go? Picture
The little white plug in center and the rectangular plug at bottom right/center partially cut off.
The big plug think is for ignition (tested and does not start) and not sure what that white plug is.
I remember backing out screws on the black rectangular one after dropping lower dash panel, but can not see where it goes. 96 XJ
Can anyone help?

Can anyone ID what that rectangular plug is?
The one at bottom with 6 wires going into it.
I took 2 pics of that area after first dropping lower dash and can not see it. Murphy's law of photos.
Have looked any many online pics under dash and cannot find a pic of that plug. Frustrating.

Ignition does not. The under dash lights work most of the time as have lower dash out guess that might be grounding issue, but with them on and turn key nada. There is only 6" of the wire before plug so almost for sure it has to go to that big box mounted to the lower dash.
I can not find a mirror so will likely have to go buy one. The plug has female electrical contacts (6), so it connect to a male 6 wire plug of some sort.
I do remember unscrewing 2 sheet metal/plastic type screws and that it was tightest wire after dropping lower dash, hence why disconnected it. But with touch can not find where it goes. The other strange thing is do not see this plug in others pics. Mine is 96.
Thanks for question

CCKen, I just tested again, everything works except starter, it buzzes when turn ignition, then extra turn to start and nothing. It is possible it is not hooked to lower dash, maybe to something above, but have not found yet. Off to store now for mirror.

If everything worked fine it could be a trailer connector. But it does not start so almost for sure an ignition switch plug or related.
Used mirror to look everywhere, stumped.
Hope someone here can recognize.
Thanks

If someone with 96 XJ could take a pic of under-dash, by putting cam at brake pedal angled up to get the dash from underneath, for sure that will solve my problem. Then post here.
Thanks in advance. A 95 or 97 would likely do the trick too.

Closeup of plug
The tan area is where a male 8 prong connector would go into it
Hope someone can recognize it, or post a pic of their underdash on 96.

It also may be a data link connector (?).
I don't have a '96 FSM so I can't verify but in '97 the data link connector was moved inside to under the dash, to the left of the steering column. The '95 had the data link connector located in the engine bay.
The '95 had an ABS data link connector in the spot you are working in but it didn't look like the connector in your pic.

Thanks CCKen and Programbo. yes it turns off headlights after 30 secs or so.
Will test that now. Its never had a problem starting in 10 years, so suspect its ignition switch related.
What baffles me is that did disconnect it, after removing screws. Yet can see nowhere to connect it. Next time will do 5 pics underdash, not 2 before taking it apart.

It might be code reader port. I suggestion from a friend. Makes sense it goes nowhere unless a tech plugs in his meter. The screws are just to anchor it.
That still leaves the white plug and and the fact it will not crank the engine.
