U joint

My U joint went dry and is popping in my pass side front axel. Im trying to price the parts but what it looks like is I cant replace just the U joint. They're telling me I have to buy the whole axle. Can I not just replace the u joint. Any body had any experience with this. My jeep is an 01

you deff can replace just the ujoint , go to auto zone and tell them you need an axel ujoint , if you wanna order one id get the spicer 760x its around 30 bucks a peice as apposed to the autozone ones wich are about 15

Autozone is one of the places that I checked. The dummies behind the counter could not find just the U joint. Is it like a universal or something? I guess I could just have them look up spicer 760x. did you have to do this to your jeep?

Well they are universial joints , he just typed that in the computor and it came up axles or driveshaft

Most of the parts counter people at Autozone used to be counter people at McDonalds. NAPA is usually a better choice, or a locally owned parts house with old timers workin the counter work out best too.

If you do go to autozone, look up your part numbers first on autozone.com. Usually saves some headach. I think napa's parts are better anyway, But if you can wait till a weekday got for a OE u-joint from the dealer. Origional Equipment is usually a little better, and you dont want to have to do those again.

Or go to Advance and ask to speak to the parts pro, these guys are usually retired mechanics. or cut all the crap and order the spicer

have you taken it apart yet? some come with CV style axles?

rdeskater 02-20-2010 08:51 PM

look behind the hub if there's a rubber boot around the "u-joint" its a cv-driveshaft if you can see the joint its a u(niversal)-joint. my local advance auto couldnt get me a spicer, they offered me a "rock buster" or something like that, no grease fitting on it. back to the shelf it went bough the $20 one with a grease fitting, regular lubrication will make them last alot longer

no my original axle is the old style with the u joint. the only full axle that you can buy now is the CV style. Thats one reason I dont want to replace the hole thing. that rubber bushing mess is for the birds. i cant stand that stuff. theres a napa in the next town over im going to chech there
