Which typ of "car-paint" was used?
Hello guys and greetings from germany,
maybe someone of you can give me an answer for
the following question:
Some model-years of the cherokee were painted with a kind of "reflow-lacquer" in german its called "thermoplast-Lack"...this kind of car-paint is very hard to remove in order to repaint the car.
Was this kind of Lacquer used through all the model years until 2001?
My Cherokee is a 1997 Facelift, and im not quite sure which kind of Lacquer was used...
Thx a lot
Greetings

I believe that Cherokees where never painted with a lacquer. Mainly because it's too expansive (and to hard, lacquer needs a lot of coats. To look good) to use for general production. They did use enamel (whether a solid or metallic paint), and clear coat. And Chrysler has a bad history of their paint not sticking. (A lot of recalls) Your tag on drivers door will tell you what was used. Here's a site http://www.xjjeeps.com/default.aspx?region=us with PDF format Mopar- Chrysler OEM parts catalogs, Down load a copy for yourself. The first few pages explains the body code tags (including paint & procedures) Someone else could of painted in lacquer, But I highly doubt it because of the high expanse, and poor durability of it. Also check the Chrysler recall lists on your Cherokee. They had a lot of paint recalls. My '91 was repainted free due to that about 12 years ago.

Thx for the reply.
Just went outside, took a picture of the body code plate.
So what does it say?
Following the "Parts catalog" from the link above:
paint procedure: APA
Primary Paint: PW1
Secondary Paint: QW1

Factory enamel pretty much went away by 1980, lacquer long before (except for a handful of hand-sprayed low-production manufacturers) Urethane single and two-state paints pretty much took over.
The early versions used a water based color coat that wouldn't adhere to the primer correctly and peeled like all heck- Chrysler, GM..they all had problems..thank you EPA... followed by a solvent based clear
paint procedure: APA = monochrome paint (entire vehicle is a single color, not two-tone)
Primary Paint: PW1 = color #1 is Stone White Clear Coat
Secondary Paint: QW1 = color #2 is Stone White Clear Coat

Thanks for the info: that explains why my build sheet says APAS Monotone Paint (The S being for the Silver it is painted) Where did you learn that handy bit of info? Ya learn something new every day!

APA= monochrome paint
APB= two tone paint (car)
APC- two tone paint (truck)
"P" code is the main body color
"Q" code is the secondary body color. (same as P if monochrome)
Any Chrysler product from 1984 forward should use that scheme.

Thx a lot guys!
Another question right here:
All Cherokees which were built for the german market got a "engine immobilizer",
was it the same with the ones which were built for the US?
