I tried to start my 96 XJ 4.0 auto and nothing happens when I turn the key.No clicking or anything. I checked the battery and its at 12.9 volts.Any ideas?It don't make any noise at all.Ok,I just tapped on the starter and when my wife turned the key there was a bright flash from the starter and it started.Bad starter?It keeps starting now.I tried it 4xs and started everytime.

Sounds like your neutral safety switch. Try starting it in neutral, or hold the key in the start position and move the shifter from park to neutral and back.

i completely agree, the same thing was wrong with mine. so i bypassed the safety switch all together and it works fine now.

 

sounds like starter because the tap worked. but check ur terminals and wire brush them down if there is corrsion. also it sounds weird. but shake your battery. it worked for me.

 

Any more ideas?

 

check your neutral safety switch, may want to pull it off and clean it or take it to a jeep dealership or someone who knows jeeps and let them try to clean it. i cleaned mine cause i was having this problem.
